The Blazers ended a 31-game conference losing streak as they topped conference rival Wesley 8-7 Saturday. The overtime thriller marked their first ever victory in conference play.
Wesley notched the first two goals of the game in the first period before Hood senior Dominique Shorter netted the first goal of the game. Nick Spicer tied the game at two in the second quarter off a great feed by Shorter.
Corey Roberts gave Hood its first lead of the game near the end of the third period with his 11th goal of the season.
William Lane stopped 17 shots in net to help keep his team in the game.
Coach Jeremy Mattoon was pleased that his team accomplished one of his goals going into the season.
“You would have thought we won the national championship. I am proud of them.”
Coach Mattoon expressed that one conference win is not good enough.
“It’s really simple; we can be proud that we won one game but don’t be satisfied. We need to win three CAC games to make the playoffs, so we look at it as we won one but we need two more.”
Although Wesley outshot the Blazers 47-28 in the game, it was the Blazers that were the clutch team down the stretch winning face-offs and setting teammates up down the stretch.
The Hood Blazers (4-4, 1-2 CAC) will continue their conference schedule at home against Salisbury Wednesday.
